Why it mattersWhy it matters

An online shop built to sell, not just to look good

Most ecommerce sites lose sales in three places: slow pages, a clunky checkout and products nobody can find. That's where we focus.

Properly fast, on mobile too

We optimise images, code and Core Web Vitals so product pages and checkout load quickly. Fewer shoppers leave before they buy.

A checkout that keeps customers

Fewer steps, the payment options UK shoppers expect and delivery costs shown on the product page, because surprise extra costs are a top reason baskets are abandoned.

How our ecommerce development works

Every ecommerce build follows the same order: range and business model first, then design and customer journey, then build and integrations, and finally launch and improvements based on real sales data.

  1. 01Kick-off

    Strategy & range

We go through your range, margins, customers and systems, and choose the platform from that, not the other way round.

  2. 02Design

    Design & customer journey

Home, category, product pages and checkout are designed mobile-first, with one aim: making it easy to buy.

  3. 03Development

    Build & integrations

We build the shop, set up payments, delivery and VAT, and connect Xero or QuickBooks, stock and product feeds.

  4. 04Ongoing

    Launch & growth

We test the purchase flow, migrate data, set up redirects and launch, then improve based on conversion and sales.

  • You're launching an online shop

You want to build an online shop from scratch and get it right first time, with platform, payments and delivery that just work.

  • You sell to consumers and trade

You need trade pricing, wholesale logins or integrations with your business systems.

    FAQFAQ

    Questions about ecommerce website design

What UK retailers ask us most before we start building.

Bark's 2026 UK price guide puts agency-built ecommerce websites at roughly £5,000–£15,000. Where you land depends on the platform, how much custom design you need, the number of products to migrate and which systems the shop connects to. On top come running costs such as a Shopify plan (from £19 a month billed yearly) and payment fees. After a first call you get a fixed proposal.

Start with your range, margins and the customers you want to reach. Then choose an ecommerce platform, set up payments, delivery and VAT, and write your terms and conditions. After that the shop is built, products are added and the whole purchase flow is tested before launch. We can handle the entire journey or just the parts you need help with.

You must tell customers they can cancel an order up to 14 days after delivery without giving a reason, show clear prices including VAT, and publish your business details, terms and a privacy policy. Non-essential cookies need consent under ICO guidance, with rejecting as easy as accepting. We build all of this in before launch, though your terms should be checked by a legal adviser.

It depends on scope. A shop on a standard theme with a modest range can be ready in weeks, while custom design, many integrations and migrating data from an old platform take longer. The biggest variables are product data and photography. We agree a timeline with milestones before work starts, so you can plan your launch and marketing.

Yes. We move products, customers and order history, map every old URL to its new address with 301 redirects, and check that page titles and structured data carry over. That way you keep your Google rankings, no links break and returning customers can still find their accounts. After launch we monitor Search Console for errors.

It depends on the platform. Shopify's UK plans start at £19 a month billed yearly (£25 monthly), and Shopify Payments charges from 2% + 25p per online card sale. WooCommerce has no subscription but needs hosting, maintenance and paid extensions, and WooPayments charges 1.5% + 25p for UK cards. On top come apps, shipping integrations and time for updates. We set out expected running costs in our proposal.

It depends on your range, budget and who will run the shop. Shopify suits businesses that want to launch quickly without managing hosting. WooCommerce suits those who want full ownership or already run WordPress. Headless suits large ranges and international selling. W3Techs data shows WooCommerce and Shopify are the two most used systems. We recommend one after a first call and explain why.

Yes. We build WooCommerce shops for businesses that want the shop and content in one WordPress site, full ownership and freedom to customise. We also set up hosting, backups, security and updates, so the shop stays fast and secure. Payments run through WooPayments or Stripe, and Xero for WooCommerce keeps your accounts in sync.

In headless ecommerce the shopfront and the back end are separated. Products, orders and checkout live in an ecommerce platform such as Shopify, while the website itself is built freely and pulls data from it. You get very fast pages and complete design freedom, but it costs more upfront and larger changes need a developer.

B2B selling usually needs customer-specific pricing, trade logins, quotes and payment on account. Shopify and WooCommerce can both handle that with the right setup and apps. For more complex needs, such as large catalogues or tight ERP integration, a headless build connected to your business systems may be the better choice. We'll map your requirements first.

A website builder is designed to publish information quickly and often bolts on a basic shop. An ecommerce platform is built to sell, with stock control, variants, checkout, payments, delivery rules and accounting integrations. If online sales matter to your revenue, a proper ecommerce platform is almost always the right choice and easier to grow with.

Yes. Shopify suits businesses that want to launch quickly, avoid managing hosting and updates, and grow with ready-made apps. We design the theme, set up payments, shipping and VAT, and connect the shop to Xero, your stock system and Google Shopping, for example with the free Shopify by Xero integration. Read more about our work as a Shopify agency.

A simple shop can be built yourself on a ready-made platform. An ecommerce agency pays off when the shop has to connect to accounting and stock, when you're replatforming and can't afford to lose traffic, or when design and conversion decide how much you sell. Many retailers start DIY and bring in an agency once growth stalls.

Card payments are essential, and digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal speed up mobile checkout. Buy now, pay later options like Klarna can suit higher order values. Fees vary: Shopify Payments starts at 2% + 25p on the Basic plan, while Stripe's standard UK card rate is 1.5% + 20p. We set up and test every method before launch.

Yes. We connect the shop to accounting software such as Xero and QuickBooks, plus stock and courier systems, so orders, VAT and payments are recorded without manual entry. Shopify by Xero is a free integration, and Xero for WooCommerce covers WordPress shops. For more complex flows we build custom integrations through the APIs.

Yes. Every shop we build gets SEO foundations: a clear category structure, unique metadata, structured data for products and reviews, and a product feed ready for Google Shopping. To grow further we offer ongoing search engine optimisation and paid advertising, so organic and paid traffic work together rather than competing.

Yes. The shop, the domain, customer data and every account (platform, payments, analytics and ads) are set up in your business's name. We work with access you grant us, and you can remove it at any time. You're never locked in, and if you ever move to another agency, everything goes with you.

You can run the shop yourselves, because we walk your team through everything at handover. If you want to grow, we keep improving conversion rate, SEO, advertising and automation based on how the shop actually sells, with clear reporting so you can see what each change delivers.
