Hiring a web designer?

Answers to the questions UK businesses ask us most about web design, UX and UI.

Web design is shaping how a website looks and works for the people who use it. It covers structure, navigation, layout, typography, colour, imagery and how each page leads to the next step. Good web design gets your message across in seconds, works on every screen size and makes it easy to get in touch or buy. A good web designer balances all of that with your brand.

Responsive web design means one website that adapts its layout to whatever screen it is viewed on: desktop, tablet or phone. Content reflows, text stays readable and buttons stay easy to tap, with no separate mobile site to maintain. It matters because more than half of UK web traffic now comes from mobile devices, so for many businesses the phone version is the one most customers see.

UX design decides whether visitors can find what they came for and act on it. It means understanding what people need, in what order, and removing friction along the way: confusing menus, long forms, unclear buttons. In our process it happens in wireframes, where content and user journeys are agreed before visual design starts, so the finished site looks good and is easy to use.

Web design decides how the website should look and work for visitors. Web development turns that design into a working site with code, a CMS, forms and integrations. The two need to be closely aligned, or details get lost in the handover. We do both, so the design you sign off is what gets built, as part of our work as a web design agency.

Consistency more than decoration. A clear hierarchy so the key message comes first, readable typography, generous white space, imagery that shows your actual business and a visual style that holds together on every page. It also has to load quickly, work on mobile and stay up to date, because visitors notice outdated prices, broken links and generic stock photos straight away.

We start with your goals, audiences and site structure, then move through UX wireframes, UI design and responsive layouts for desktop, tablet and mobile. If you want, we also build the website and support the launch. The proposal sets out the exact scope, the pages included and the technology, so there are no surprises later.

UX (user experience) design is about how the site works: structure, navigation and how easily visitors find what they need and get in touch. UI (user interface) design is how it looks: layout, typography, colour and buttons. A good website needs both, so we handle them together rather than as separate projects.

Yes. Responsive web design is standard in every project. Layouts, type, navigation and forms adapt to each screen size, and with over half of UK web traffic coming from phones we usually design mobile-first. Before launch we test the agreed page templates on real devices and the main browsers.

Bark's 2026 UK guide puts freelance web designers at roughly £35–£150+ per hour, with agency websites for small businesses typically £2,000–£7,000. Our price depends on page templates, content, features, integrations and whether you need design only or design and build. After a first call we recommend a scope and send a fixed proposal.

It depends on the number of page templates, whether your content and copy are ready, how many people need to sign off and whether we build the site too. A small business website moves much faster than a large site with complex features. We agree a timeline before the project starts, including when we need decisions from you, so nothing stalls halfway.

A template is quicker and cheaper to start with and can work for a simple site with standard needs. Custom web design is built around your goals, content and brand, so the site stands out from competitors and every page guides visitors to the right next step. We start from what you need rather than from a template, and help you decide what level makes sense for your budget.

It isn't essential, but it makes web design faster and the result more consistent. If you already have a logo, colours and typefaces that work, we design the website around them. If your identity is missing or dated, it is often wise to sort that out first, either as a light step within the project or through a full branding and logo design project.

Yes. When a CMS is part of the project, we build editable content blocks around how your team works, so you can add pages, swap images and publish news without a developer. Before handover we run a training session. We agree early on which parts should be editable, so nothing is locked down by accident.

Every design is planned for readability, a clean heading structure, mobile use and accessibility, aiming for WCAG 2.2 AA, which helps you meet Equality Act duties. Copywriting, keyword research and ongoing SEO can be added to the scope. We agree who is responsible for copy, imagery and SEO before the project starts.

A website that generates enquiries makes the next step obvious on every page: a clear message at the top, proof such as client logos, reviews and case studies, short forms and contact buttons that are easy to reach on a phone. For ads and campaigns, a dedicated landing page focused on one offer usually works better than sending traffic to the home page.

Yes. Ecommerce web design follows the same principles but puts more weight on category pages, product pages and checkout, because that is where sales are won or lost. Baymard's research finds unexpected extra costs are the top reason shoppers abandon checkout, so we make delivery costs clear early. Everything is designed mobile-first. Read more about our ecommerce websites.

Look at their previous work, how they describe their process and whether they ask about your goals before talking about looks. Check that design and development are joined up, who owns the website afterwards and what support looks like after launch. A good web designer or UX design agency sets out exactly what is included before work starts, so there are no surprises later.
